DHAKA: The Cabinet on Monday (February 13) gave an approval to the draft of ‘Civil Aviation Operation Act-2017’ that proposed death penalty as maximum punishment for obstructing aircraft operation.

The approval came from a regular meeting of the cabinet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said journalists that the government has updated the Civil Aviation Ordinance-1960 by increasing the degree of punishment.

He further said the offender can alternatively be sentenced to life term imprisonment and fined Tk five-crore for such act.

Besides, those who would violate the order to run flights will be sentenced to five years of imprisonment or fined at least Tk one-crore or both, he added.

Those who would forge certificates, licenses or route permits will suffer the same punishment, the cabinet secretary added.

Mohammad Shafiul Alam also said that those who would carry dangerous goods, which would threat human health and environment, and security, on planes will be sentenced to seven years imprisonment or a fine of Tk 50-lakh.

The cabinet secretary further said if any person of foreign planes violates Bangladesh’s air, will face seven years imprisonment or Tk 50 lakh as fine.
